How we choose products
Our methodology, in plain English — so you know exactly how much of any recommendation is hands-on experience and how much is research.
Our selection criteria
Every product on this site is weighed against four things, in this order:
- Real-world durability. Will it survive daily life — kids, pets, moves, and years of use? This is the question a renovation pro asks first, because a beautiful piece that fails in a year is a bad buy at any price.
- Build quality and materials. Solid wood vs. veneer, dovetailed vs. stapled drawers, the weight of the hardware, the honesty of the finish. Small details predict how a piece ages.
- Value for the money. Not just cheap — worth it. We look for the piece that punches above its price and flag the ones that charge for a name.
- Fit for the reader. The best pick for a rental is different from the best pick for a forever home. We say who each product is right for — and who should skip it.
What “renovator-tested” means
Where Cat has personally installed, used, or lived with a product on a job or in her own home, we label the observation as first-hand — that’s the “renovator’s note” you’ll see on key picks. It is always specific and always true: assembly quirks, hardware that fails, how a finish holds up. We do not run a laboratory and we do not pretend to. When a recommendation is based on research and verified buyer feedback rather than hands-on use, we say so clearly. We would rather tell you “this is research-based” than fake a test.
Prices and product claims
We never fabricate a price, a star score, or a buyer-feedback count. Prices come only from a live data feed and carry the date they were checked; when no live price is available, we show a “Check price on Amazon” link instead of a number. See our affiliate disclosure for how our links work.
How and when we update
Products get discontinued, prices drift, and better options arrive. We review our main roundups at least every six months and re-date them so you can see how fresh a guide is (look for the “Updated” line near the top). When a product becomes unavailable or is bettered by a newer model, we swap it.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, we fix it and update the page’s modified date. Spotted an error, a discontinued product, or a price that looks off? Tell us — we take it seriously.
Editorial independence
No brand pays for placement on this site, and affiliate commission never determines our rankings. If we ever accept a product sample to evaluate, that will be disclosed on the page, and it will not buy a good review.
